The National Student Labor Week of Action will conclude on Tuesday April 4th, the anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with a very important event at UB's North Campus. Join UB United Students Against Sweatshops, friends in labor, university faculty, and the community for a rally in support of UB custodial workers.
SPEAKERS include Stewart Acuff, the national organizing director for the AFL-CIO, Maura Pellettieri(UBSAS), Jim Holstun (English Dept), and Allison Duwe (Coalition for Economic Justice) plus worker stories read by students.
The growth of this day of action signals the growth of the campus movement for economic and social justice as students demand immigrant workers' rights, living wage jobs, the right to organize, no more sweatshops, and an end to private prisons!
At UB, students have been focused recently on securing living wages for outsourced custodial workers. In the early 90's UB began contracting with private custodial companies. UB contracted out the work to save money, but the university is only saving money because their contractors are
paying poverty wages and not providing adequate benefits to their workers. It is time for us to stand with UB's workers and students and demand a change.
