RED DOORS, 2005, USA, dir. Georgia Lee, Super 16 mm, Color (feature)

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Red Doors weaves some of my own home video footage from the past twenty years into a fictionalized narrative about a contemporary, dysfunctional Chinese-American family. For the Chinese, to paint one’s front doors red is said to bring good luck, fortune, and harmony to the household. The term “Red Doors” is therefore an ironic counterpoint to a family that is emotionally distant and struggles to communicate. The film reflects on how it is often most difficult to connect with those nearest and dearest to your heart.
SYNOPSIS:
Georgia Lee's 'RED DOORS' tells the story of a troubled Chinese-American family; the father has retired into deep silence and eventually wanders away from the family on a personal spiritual quest.

The mother presides over a 29-year-old professional, a young medical intern and a teenager whose idea of letting a boy know she's interested in him is putting a bomb in his locker. A small bomb, to be sure. When the intern falls in love with an actress, the family life grows even more fraught, since there is some doubt that the mother can handle this information. The film handles this not as sitcom material but with a warm tenderness."
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
