Tanya Furman of Pennsylvania State University-University Park, Professor of Geosciences and Assistant Vice President & Associate Deanfor Undergraduate Education, has worked to identify best practices for organizations wishing to develop mentoring programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). She has developed an innovative series of programs that promise a substantial effect on increasing underrepresented students considering STEM-based career opportunities, and has built collaborative relationships at other academic institutions that now use her programs.

The Gruber Women's Rights Prize PDF Print E-mail
The Gruber Women's Rights Prize includes a $500,000 unrestricted monetary award and gold medal, and honors individuals who have made significant contributions to human rights that advance the rights of women and girls around the world.  Recipients are selected by a committee of distinguished experts in the field.  The 2008 Gruber Women's Rights Laureates were Yanar Mohammed, Sapana Pradhan Malla and Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian.  For more information on the 2008 recipients, visit:

 DAM STREET/HONG YAN, 2005, China, Director Li Yu, Color Feature, in Mandarin with English Subtitles. In the early–1980s, Xiao Yun—a sixteen year–old girl living in small riverside town in China—discovers she is pregnant. The local community is stunned, her family loses face and she and her boyfriend are expelled from school. In the aftermath, her boyfriend leaves her, and she gives birth and is then forced to put her child up for adoption.

Ten years later, her relationship with her family strained and ostracized by residents of the town, Xiao Yun is reduced to working as a singer in a local song and dance troupe. And her only real companion is Xiao Yong, a fiercely affectionate boy who protects her from the critical eyes of the community until a marriage proposal discovers the limits of their friendship, and the depth of her unresolved past.
