Gender Week 2006: Gender Matters! V |
From October 9-13, 2006, the University at Buffalo Institute for Research and Education on Women and Gender (IREWG) presented its fifth annual “Gender Week: Gender Matters @ UB V,” a series of lectures, exhibits, films, open classes, and performances, all focusing on gender-inclusive and sex-specific research and teaching. Gender Week V featured keynote speaker Judith Heumann, an internationally recognized leader in the disability community and a lifelong civil rights advocate for people with disabilities. Amy Goodman, host of radio's "Democracy Now!", and Eyal Press, author of Absolute Convictions, were also featured speakers during Gender Week. The Institute hosted a variety of faculty panels, student discussions, and exhibits, including Out of the Mouths of Babes: Learning from Young Women about Gender, Empowerment, and Social Change in the 21st Century and Getting to Full Professor, a panel for associate level faculty. And the winner of the graduate-sponsored Liberation Bake-Off was UB English graduate student Shelby Crosby with her liberating snickerdoodles (Sarah Lewis' peanut butter fudge was a close second).
On Friday, October 13, a dramatic early winter storm cut Gender Week short, but the complete calendar and speaker information can be viewed below.
