Women MUST Use Their Voice:

Policy and Power

Friday, April 25, 2008 @ 3 pm
105 Harriman Hall, South Campus
A reception will follow the lecture

It is essential that women become more involved wherever they can influence and improve policies that affect equitable treatment in the workplace and the welfare of families. Pay Equity Day was held on April 22 this year, and it highlights the fact that the average salary for a women (at $0.77 for each $1.00 earned by men) still trails that of men. Women work almost 16 months to earn what men earn in 12.

The under-utilization of the power that women can have is evident in the carefully built federal legislation (recently vetoed) that would have expanded health care coverage for children.  As women assume more leadership roles, they have an opportunity to have a significant impact on other policies involving trade, labor conditions and the environment. Union workers in the US can negotiate for its “left behind” workers when jobs are shipped abroad. Higher salaries, wages and better benefits for workers outside the US can help level the field and would reduce abuse of those workers.
