The Gender Institute (Institute for Research & Education on Women & Gender) announces its biannual competition for course development grants. The Institute is offering grants to tenure-line faculty of up to $3,000 to develop courses that will add to and strengthen the curriculum on women and/or gender across the disciplines at UB. We will consider proposals for courses taught at any level of undergraduate or graduate education.
Proposals might include: 1) new individually-taught courses; 2) new team-taught courses; or 3) the significant revision of an existing course for the purpose of integrating gender issues into the curriculum. Awards are expected to be used over the summer of 2009 to develop courses for future addition to the department’s course offerings. Grants of up to $3,000 can be used to fund the following types of expenses: - purchase of books or relevant journals - purchase of CD-Roms or other instructional materials and equipment for the course - salary for a summer research assistant - acquisition of research materials or collections relevant to the course - development of improved models for teaching the course Grant money cannot be used as personal summer salary for the faculty member. The grant is transferred from a state account to the faculty’s departmental chosen state account for expenditure in FY 2009-2010. Proposals should include the following information: 1) a general course description that addresses course content, aims and objectives, anticipated size and instructional level, and the specific ways this course will enhance the curriculum within your department, school, or across the disciplines; 2) a preliminary syllabus or course outline; 3) a preliminary bibliography; 4) a statement of how you plan to use the grant money, including a budget with estimated expenses; 5) a letter of support from your departmental chair, stating the department is receptive to the inclusion of the new or revised course. Recipients of the award are expected to present on the new course at a Gender Institute event during the 2009-2010 academic year. The deadline for submission is in December 2008 (check back for the exact date). Awards will be announced by February first with funding available as of July 1, 2009.
