She is currently a member of the Executive Board of the Folger Institute and the President of the UB Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Her community service includes education advocacy through promoting qualified candidates for the Buffalo School Board and planning for a secure future and high academic performance in Buffalo public schools.

Dr. Bono has been active in the Gender Institute since its inception, serving on committees and chairing the first Gender Week @ UB held in September 2002. Peggy Acara (Co-Director 1997 - 2000), retired, was Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She was appointed as Co-Director by then Provost Thomas Headrick in 1997. With Co-Director Isabel Marcus, she strengthened the representation of women in the sciences and the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences on Institute committees. This is an important constituency at UB, in an area that still suffers from underrepresentation of women on the faculty. Her academic career of over thirty years focused on research in renal function and the interrelationships of transport and metabolism in kidneys, at levels from the sub-cellular to the whole animal. Major research funding was received from NIH (NIDDK and NIAAA)and the American Heart Association. She served for ten years as Associate Editor for Pharmacological Reviews and as Editorial Advisory Board member of Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. Dr. Acara has participated in numerous University committees on tenure and promotion, as well as in mentoring programs for high school and college students in the sciences, and has had a career-long interest in mentoring of women faculty. She was co-convener of the Association of Women Full Professors at UB, begun in 1997. Dr. Acara offered a model of feminist management to the Gender Institute that enriched and empowered all who worked with her, and she is considered a major advocate for the promotion of women in all aspects of life at UB.
