Highlights from Gender Week will begin on Monday, October 9 at 4pm, when Judith Heumann, our keynote speaker, presents on "Gender, Disability and Global Development" in 105 Harriman Hall on UB's South Campus. Ms. Heumann is the Lead Consultant for the World Bank's Global Partnership on Disability and Development and an innovator in disability and human rights advocacy.

Prizes will be awarded on Tuesday, October 10, and there will also be a table with Gender Week and Gender Institute information. On Tuesday, October 10, from 6-8pm in 215 Natural Sciences Building on North Campus, the School of Social Work will host Out of the Mouths of Babes: Learning from Young Women about Gender, Empowerment, and Social Change in the 21st Century. Five young activists from Planned Parenthood, Gay & Lesbian Youth Services, WNY Girls' Schools Coalition, National Conference for Community & Justice and the Massachusetts Avenue Project will speak on their work in the community.
Join the Media Study Forum on Torture and the Gender Institute for Amy Goodman, host of radio's Democracy Now!, on Wednesday, October 11 at 5pm in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall on North Campus. Goodman will speak on media and torture and is touring in support of Democracy Now!'s tenth anniversary bringing independent and hard-hitting coverage to listeners across the globe at www.democracynow.org. The talk is free, but tickets are required; contact the Gender Institute for details. On Thursday, October 12 at 7pm, Buffalo native Eyal Press, author of Absolute Convictions, will present the keynote speech for the Baldy Center's "The Abortion Controversy in Context" conference in 106 O'Brian Hall on North Campus. Press' book considers the abortion culture wars through the eyes of his obstetrician father. The conversation will continue with a reception following the talk and a daylong conference on Friday, October 13. Registration and information at The Baldy Center website. Gender Week will close on Friday, October 13 at 8pm with SHOES!, a dynamic pastiche of characters performed by artist Francine Conley in the Woldman Theatre, 112 Norton Hall on North Campus. Conley says of this work, “Indeed, shoes conjure up themes of journey and sexuality.
